Anini needs air connectivity

Dear Editor,

Anini is in the news almost daily since cut off of surface road communication three months ago.

While the problems are many, I would like to focus on inadequate air services.

After the disruption of road communication, the entire population of the District is solely dependent on Helicopter services. Now on any given day, there is a long list of waiting passengers at Roing, Anini and Itanagar to avail Helicopter services.

The govt. of Arunachal Pradesh provides Helicopter services every Monday and Thursday. On Monday small helicopter with a carrying capacity of eight passengers is provided and only two seats are allotted for Anini bound passengers, from Naharlagun and rest of the seats are reserved for Dibrugarh, Pasighat, Dambuk and Roing etc. Recently these two seats for Anini bound passenger have been increased to four after much hue and cry.

On Thursday, thankfully bigger helicopter having a carrying capacity of 22/24 passengers is provided and Anini bound passengers could get upto 8 to 10 seats from Naharlagun and rest of the seats being reserved for other destinations.

It is seen that these two scheduled Helicopter services are frequently disrupted and fail to materialise on several occasions, mainly due to three reasons; maintenance of aircraft, bad weather conditions, and requisition for some other purposes by govt. or being diverted for VIPs duties.

Therefore, the present system of air services is totally inadequate and only negligible percentage of commuters could avail air service. Hence there is long list of waiting passengers at Anini, Roing and Naharlagun.

In spite of sufficient time and fair weather, rarely two sorties materialise in between Roing to Anini. When confronted, the pilots cite non receipt of orders from the Department. It has also come to our notice that Helicopter services are being provided where there are negligible passengers; which are uneconomical routes and also have very good road connectivity.

While we are crying for declaration of state of emergency in Dibang Valley till restoration of road surface communication, the govt. did not move an inch in regards to providing of additional Helicopter services.

I would like to request CM and Governor to kindly intervene and give suitable directions to Civil Aviation Dept.

Yours,

Empi Meya

Propaganda does not work, changing system does

Dear Editor,

Apropos the editorial "Lesson from sporting extravaganza"( 5 July), it is a matter of great shame that in order to "change the face of India and posh Delhi", the sponsors of the Commonwealth Games have barbarically evicted as many as 1,00,000 families from their dwellings. New Delhi desires to project India's image as a "modernising emerging economic giant" by organising the Commonwealth Games, but no nation can become "modern" by exemplifying inhuman attitude towards its own people.

Moreover, in this globalised age, it is not easy to fool the world by sheer propaganda. Human Development Index, Corruption Perception Index and other such parameters, prepared by international organisations and published universally, expose the backwardness of India in fields which really matter. Is the world ignorant of the fact how the globe's largest hungry nation, instead of solving the problems of starvation, engages itself in the nonsensical Mandir-Masjid issue? The atrocities against women, female foeticide, child marriage, child and bonded labour, dowry deaths, witch hunting, caste wars and the ghastly "honour killings" may be cleverly forgotten by "nationalists" in the pride of a nuclear India, but the world perceives India as still living in the dark Medieval age and shudders with horror at the exposure of such savageness. And the "economic giant" in India sees to it that as many as 75% of its own men subsist on less than Rs.20 per day and ranks 134 in the United Nations Human Development Index!

The Commonwealth brigade may try their utmost in projecting India in a glorifying light, but the international community is not blind enough to take them at their big words. The face of India will change only when each and every citizen is guaranteed atleast food, shelter, attire, education, medicine and justice.

Yours,

Kajal Chatterjee,

Keep laws in mind

Dear Editor,

Thanks to the District Magistrate for cleaning up of the stray animal which was one of the reason for congestion in the town. But question is whether it was performed under the supervision of qualified veterinarian and necessary precaution as per law were taken. Apart from other existing law, there are provisions under Indian Penal Code which prescribes action for cruelty to animal.

So, next time please do not overlook all this acts and section.

Yours,

There is no food crisis in Upper Siang

Dear Editor,

Apropos the Readers’ Forum item under the headlines “Upper Siang suffering for want of officer” by one Vijay Taram in your esteemed daily on July 5, I would like to clarify that Upper Siang district has adequate stock of essential ration commodities under the strict guidance of Deputy Commissioner and it is free for all to take stock of the ration items. Ration items are provided to public as per Govt allotment every month. Hence the allegations of shortage of ration items including S K Oil, levy sugar and food grains are baseless and unfounded.

Regarding allegation saying  that there is no district Food and Civil Supply Officer (DF&CSO) posted at Yingkiong, I would like to further clarify that I have joined as DF&CSO in charge at Yingkiong in March, 2010 and since then people have been provided ration items under the guidance of deputy commissioner.

Vijay Taram should not issue such false and misleading information in future just to serve his own interest and malign the reputation of responsible officers.

Yours,

A  Apang

DF&SCO incharge

Upper Siang district

Far away from Home, Arunachalees looks for space

Taba Ajum

NEW DELHI, July 5: "Though I don't like working in Delhi, I see no reason to go back to Arunachal at this juncture," shared one Arunachalee student during an interaction.

Like him there are thousands of Arunachalee students who after finishing various degrees and courses, are in dilemma whether to look for job in metro cities or go back to Arunachal.

Like any normal individual they all bear the desire to come back to their place of birth but not so encouraging job scenario in AP is making them to have second thoughts.

While most of the students agree that things are getting better in state, still they feel more should be done so that students can be absorbed in jobs according to their degrees. "Many of my friends who have pursued engineering degrees are now working as teachers or as clerks. It’s a lose not only to the state but individual as well that an engineering graduate have to leave their profession to work in other fields," told one Arunachalee working with a leading MNC based in Noida. It's not easy for professionals to leave their field of expertise. Another aspect which desist young Arunachalee to go back to their home state is rampant illegal appointment practiced for various government jobs. Even though jobs are advertised, they feel fair selection is never done.

"My friends who are already in Arunachal want to come back to Delhi. They have attended numerous interviews and were quite confident of clearing them. But till now nothing has happen as most of the time people are appointed not based on merit but on money power. I belong to an ordinary family and won’t be able to pay money to get government jobs, so am happy to be working in private companies here in Delhi," shared one young Arunachalee girl working in Delhi. She further added, "At times it’s really difficult to work here. I get targeted for even small mistake and I miss home so much. Its been 3 years I have not gone home as I never get holiday. I cry remembering my parents and my siblings."

State with one of the lowest population, it is surprising that Arunachal still has such high rate of unemployment. Most of the students blame it on the politicians for making mess out of state. "There should have been no unemployment issues if politicians properly implement policies. First of all they don’t have vision for developing the state and secondly they along with bureaucrats encourage corruption. It may hurt them but there is no denying that politicians and bureaucrats have turned Arunachal into a hell," said one aggrieved Arunachalee student who is pursuing degree in Delhi university.

Every Arunachalee students do have desire to come back and contribute something to society. But unless job situation does not improve, they will prefer fighting hard to make a life in Metros. There is growing anger among them against politicians and bureaucrats for creating such a situation. Though living far away, they are keeping eye on every move of its people and the government!

ACR warns of impending disaster

ITANAGAR, July 5: While participating at a two days Regional Consultation on combating climate change in the North Eastern and Lower Himalayan regions of India at Guwhati today, Bamang Tago, Chairperson, Arunachal Citizens Right (ACR) spoke on “ forest and implications of climate change in Arunachal Pradesh”. He said that in Arunachal Pradesh, tribal communities own mountains, rivers and forest lands. There has been steady confiscation of these un-classed forests by the forest department through conversion into reserved forests and protected areas depriving the communities of their rights and access over forests.

He further said that during the last two decades Arunachal has been subjected to major construction activities like roads and bridges which has resulted in number of landslides in every river basin, top soil erosion, river bank erosion, vital road links disconnected during the monsoons, as long as five to six months in some river basins such as Dibang Valley.

The rich forests and biodiversity of Arunachal is subjected to growing anthropogenic and biotic pressure and huge infrastructural development projects at a time when the global community is calling to stop deforestation to halt climate change.

He said that Arunachal is set to lose thousands of hectares of forest loss due to large hydro electric projects while informing that HEPs under construction in Lower Subansiri will submerge and deforest 4000 ha while Kameng will deforest close to 800 ha.

Deforestation figure for Middle Siyang project is 2800 ha and it is a staggering 5,500 ha for Dibang Multipurpose project, he added.

Proposed projects with capacities varying between 500 MW to 11,000 MW are going to destroy at least 50,000 to 60,000 ha of precious forests and biodiversity, Tago warned.

One French-Canadian joint venture involved in oil prospecting in Changlang and Tirap districts have applied to the MoEF for a forest clearance of 56,000 ha at one go!, he said.

Deforestation and diversion at such a massive scale will have huge implications on Arunachal Pradesh, he warned.
